August 2026 Release
In the Neighbourhood large scale paintings

In the Neighbourhood is an ongoing series of site-specific murals by Thierry Noir created along Kawashima Shopping Street, a historic Showa-era neighbourhood in Tokyo. The project first emerged while Noir was staying in the neighbourhood in 2025 during the production phase of Rush Hour, a major site-specific exhibition at Phillips in Roppongi, Tokyo.

Now a familiar figure, Noir returned in 2026 to develop a series of murals rooted in the identity and everyday character of the district. In the Neighbourhood now continues to evolve with further murals planned throughout the remainder of 2026 and into 2027 alongside an immersive two-bedroom Thierry Noir apartment, a stamp rally and a forthcoming exhibition in Tokyo.

Between visits to Tokyo, Noir has revisited his Tokyo imagery on canvas at different scales. These are the first large-scale paintings to emerge from the project marking an early point in a body of work that continues to develop in Tokyo.

These three murals are central to In the Neighbourhood. The Fish, created for Uoken Fishmongers, established the principle that each work should grow directly out of its place. The Sock at Aoki Laundry marked a significant development in Noir’s wider visual language, introducing an everyday object as the subject. The Head stands at the end of Kawashima Shopping Street as a public marker for the project – the only mural designed to face directly out into the public realm.
