Thierry Noir was born in Lyon, France, in 1958. His international practice is built around a radically reduced visual language of line and colour. This language emerged from the physical conditions of working at scale in public space in 1980s Berlin.
Working across painting, sculpture, printmaking and murals, Noir uses a highly distilled economy of form to create images and shapes that are immediate and highly recognisable. His work moves between the studio and the public realm, translating a consistent visual vocabulary across changes in scale, material and context.
Civic engagement is increasingly central to his practice which operates at the scale of places as well as objects, working with neighbourhoods, institutions and local communities to create projects rooted in their particular surroundings.
Noir has exhibited internationally, including solo shows at major auction houses in London, New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo. His work is held in museum collections worldwide.
