November 2025 Release

The Super Classic Heads are an ever present and beloved series with origins in the 1980s on small pieces of found cardboard. In the 2000s Noir gravitated towards 30cm by 24cm canvases owing to the readily availability of this pre-made format in Berlin art supply shops. Today, the canvases are custom made using Italian cloth. Known informally within collector circles as ‘24x30s‘, Super Classic Heads are arguably Noir’s most recognisable and essential small paintings. Distilling everything iconic about Noir’s visual language their creation forms a daily meditation for Noir to which he now returns after particularly challenging projects involving prolonged periods of travel. Minutes after completion Noir titles and dates verso in marker to ‘complete’ the painting. As important to Noir as the visual image, the titles consist of the overheard daily philosophies and concerns compiled and caught by Noir throughout the bars and restaurants of 1980s West Berlin. In 2025 Noir carries forward this same ‘street philosophy’ imagining what is still being talked about and discussed all the while with his now characteristic humorous and surrealistic twists.

Noir with ‘early’ Super Classic Heads at the Georg von Rauch-House:
(1988, Berlin)

“I first created these paintings on the Berlin Wall. The Wall was grey and I decided to put all the colours that I had on it. Almost immediately people began to ask me for the same paintings but in a small size. I realised that I could bring joy to people so I said of course. Again and again, day after day I started to sell my paintings.”
